About Katja

Katja’s passion for hospitality began in Austria’s Wachau Valley, a picturesque region known for its vineyards and culinary traditions. Inspired by her grandmother’s love of cooking and nurtured by her grandparents’ encouragement, Katja set out on a path that would take her from a small wine region to the global stage of fine dining.

After graduating from culinary school in Austria, Katja honed her skills in wine-focused restaurants across the country. She took on a pivotal role at the Burg Vital Hotel in Oberlech—a five-star luxury hotel in the Austrian Alps—where she served as Maître d’ and Head Sommelier. There, she deepened her knowledge of wine and hospitality while earning the prestigious Diplom Sommelier certification, one of Austria’s most respected wine credentials.

She later passed the Advanced Sommelier Exam with the Court of Master Sommeliers, further distinguishing herself in the field.

In 2011, Katja moved to New York City, joining the team at Le Bernardin, the acclaimed three Michelin-starred restaurant by Eric Ripert and Maguy Le Coze. Over the years, she rose from Floor Sommelier to Chef Sommelier, eventually overseeing the wine department’s daily operations.

During her tenure, Le Bernardin was awarded the Grand Award by Wine Spectator—the publication’s highest honor for wine programs. Katja credits her mentor, Aldo Sohm, for being a constant source of encouragement and inspiration throughout her journey.

In September 2022, Katja began a new chapter as Beverage Director at Koloman, a contemporary French restaurant in NYC’s NoMad neighborhood, in collaboration with Chef Markus Glocker. The concept beautifully blends Parisian creativity with Viennese tradition, earning national acclaim and numerous accolades, including:

  • “Best New Restaurant in America” – Esquire Magazine, 2022

  • Best of Award of Excellence – Wine Spectator, 2023 & 2024

  • Best Medium-Sized Wine List in New York City – Star Wine List, 2025

Katja is also expanding her expertise beyond the restaurant floor—currently working in wholesale and distribution to gain a deeper understanding of the wine industry from vineyard to glass. This hands-on experience allows her to engage with producers, logistics, and portfolio development, rounding out her already comprehensive wine background.

She remains actively involved in the broader hospitality community as a La Paulée Scholarship recipient and member of the La Paulée Sommelier Team, contributing to all of their prestigious events. She also volunteers with City Harvest, helping to combat food insecurity across New York City.

Katja continues to bring warmth, precision, and storytelling to every guest experience. Her approach to wine is grounded in education, respect for tradition, and an enduring curiosity—ensuring every moment is both memorable and meaningful.
